Barfing on holiday - what you need to know
The "Barf Circle": A quick overview of species-appropriate nutrition
As a barfing pet owner, you certainly know that dogs are omnivores. A healthy, species-appropriate diet therefore consists mainly of meat with fruit and vegetables as a side dish, rounded off with high-quality oils and minerals. The following "Barf Circle" offers you a good overview:

Why it is so important to continue the usual barf diet
But why is it important, even while on holiday, that pets who are being barfed continue to receive their usual diet. One of the main reasons is to avoid digestive problems: Sudden changes in diet can cause your dog problems such as diarrhoea or vomiting. By continuing the usual barf diet, this risk is minimised. In addition, a change in diet can cause stress and confusion. So it's better to stick to the routine, as it will make your pup feel safer and more comfortable. Conversely, you can also travel in a much more relaxed way, as the "barf routine" means you always have control over the food you feed.
Preparing for the holiday
Before travelling with your dog, you should take a few precautions. While feeding your dog at home is usually not a problem, it is not always easy to ensure a healthy and species-appropriate diet for your four-legged fellow traveller when you are on the road. But don't worry: with the right preparation, you can master this challenge.Research cash-friendly holiday destinations and accommodation.
Another tip is to find out in advance about barf-friendly holiday destinations. This is important as not all destinations are equally suitable for barf feeding. Also note that some countries may have import regulations for raw meat or certain foods. You should also check that the accommodation - whether a holiday flat, hotel or campsite - has sufficient refrigeration or freezing facilities.Transport of the barf food
Of course, it is also important to transport the barf food safely to the holiday destination. The first priority is to maintain the cold chain to ensure that the meat does not spoil. If you are travelling by car, an electric cooler in the car is ideal for storing the barf food. If necessary, equip it with extra cold packs, especially for longer journeys.
Alternative solution: Buy barf ingredients directly at your holiday destination.
If you don't want to take your barf ingredients with you on holiday, you can buy them locally - in most regions this shouldn't be a problem. It's best to find out before you go if there are any butchers or fruit and vegetable shops in your area.
Canned Barf
If all else fails and you can't get hold of sufficient quantities of meat or other ingredients, or if you don't have enough storage facilities, you don't have to worry. The magic word is: canned barfing. Barf menus are ready-made portions that contain all the necessary ingredients to ensure a balanced and species-appropriate diet.
Simply uncomplicated: The advantages of canned barf food at a glance
- Flexibility: Canned barf food can be a saviour in an emergency, for example if barfing is not possible at your holiday destination - be it due to a lack of infrastructure or limited refrigeration options.
- Portioning: The pre-portioned cans allow you to control the amount of food exactly. So you always have a complete overview.
- Practical handling: Canned barf food is extremely practical and easy to handle, especially when you are on the road and don't have a fixed kitchen available. You don't have to worry about transporting fresh ingredients or keeping them cool on the go. The tins are easy to open, require no special storage and the food is ready to go.
- Variety: Many manufacturers of barf tins offer a wide range of varieties to ensure a balanced diet for your dog. For example, you can choose between meat-only cans or complete menus.
- Shelf life: Canned barf food has a longer shelf life than fresh ingredients. This makes it ideal for longer journeys or situations where you may not have regular access to fresh food. - Hygiene: Using tins ensures a high level of hygiene when feeding. The food is well sealed and protected from bacteria and contamination.
Dr.Clauder's Barf for dogs
-----Note: You will find the term "BARF" on our tins. By this we mean "biologically species-appropriate real food" and not the frequently encountered term "biologically species-appropriate raw food". The reason for this is that we do not have the possibility to offer our Barf products raw. They are therefore boiled down to make them durable.-----
